3 Reasons Why You Should Learn How to Comfort Others

Kindness is great. When you are kind, according to the dictionary, you have the qualities of being friendly, generous, and considerate which are all wonderful traits to have. However, when you comfort others you move beyond kindness into a completely different place.

Comfort is the easing or alleviation of a person’s feelings of grief or distress. When you give comfort you give strength and hope to others. When you give comfort the action has an impact on both the giver and the receiver. Comforting can be awkward but you can learn how and here are 3 reasons why you should based on results from Inspiring Comfort’s Project and Club Comfort Programs.

1.    When you comfort someone else you feel better about yourself and happy inside.

2.    When you comfort someone else it allows you to develop a more meaningful connection with that person. You learn how to focus on others, not you.

3.    When you comfort someone else it gives your life more purpose and meaning. Making someone smile, makes you smile.

While there are many kindness programs, Inspiring Comfort’s comfort program is unique in the fact its intentional learning by the giver to the receiver. Comfort isn’t about saying much. Its about being present and letting the other person know you are there for them, just like  comfort dogs do.

Thru our programs over 8,500 intentional plaques have been made and given to date.  The plaque making process is more than art. Participants identify someone in need, think about that person, develop a message for that person, connect with that person and then reflect how they feel. This skill development is good for children at school or adults in the workplace.

There is much learning to be had in this very intentional process.  And, while the receiver of the plaque is who you start out wanting to help, at the end of the day it is the giver who has learned many valuable lessons. Do you have a message of comfort you want to give to someone?
