Do Words Matter?

“Sticks and stones”….You know the rest ….”may break my bones, but words will never hurt me”.   Is that true?

Our words have power to build up or tear down.  They can motivate someone to new levels of growth and health or they can cause someone to forever think a negative way about themselves.

Words are never inconsequential.  They have power.

Think about it, have you been hurt by someone’s words?  Maybe a quick comment that is said to you and you just can’t get out of your head?  You hear it time and time again, over and over.

These comments can be followed by “just kidding”, “I didn’t mean it”. But those phrases mean nothing, damage has been done.

I have.

These days we have become almost flip in our social interactions…..our ability to read body language and social cues is diminishing due to more time looking down at our screens and less looking around at people. Frightening.

Our words are a key connection point with people around us who are isolated or lonely, so we must choose them wisely.

So, let’s try to be aware of our words – spoken and written.  Here are some simple filters:

1.     Is it kind? Will it build someone up?

2.    Is it necessary?  Does it need to be said?

3.    Is it true?  Is it factual?

Let’s be mindful of every word we speak, and let us use our words to connect and comfort one another.
